Suspension set up

Post by S&D-RXTURBO » Wed Apr 16, 2008 5:40 pm

Hi all. I recently got a 1986 rx turbo that my son & I are running in khanacross events. ( Ran for the first time on the weekend and broke a drive shaft early in the event! )
We want to slowly build the car up to a stage where we might compete in local rallies or even the occasional circuit sprint.
I'm sure a lot of you have already been down this path. Has anyone got some good advise regarding the suspension setup? After the first run on the weekend we know we have to stiffen it up a bit. Any recommendations?

get some good camber strut tops (eg cusco) for the fronts and run some koni adjustable struts.

RX Suspension

S&D RX Turbo,

Depending on your budget best strut/shock option is KYB if you don,t mind spending close to $200 a corner. Cheap option is reconditioned stock struts with stiffer valving any good suspension place should handle that. Thicker front sway bar, Whiteline I think make one for L series, rear is a problem however. I had one custom made here in Brisbane 18mm for $180 which neutralizes the understeer when used with standard front bar. If you want to lower ride height simplest option is have the lower spring support plates sweated off and moved 30mm down the strut tube and re welded. Has to be done in conjunction with strut recon job. This retains standard suspension travel.

You're pretty limited with the L series hubs. Suspension development finished on these cars nearly 20 years ago and it has come a long way since then. The Bilsteins and stuff that were built into inverted struts with a custom lower leg (now called coilovers) were pretty good in their day but there is no need to use it today. WRX suspension development and has been huge and is ongoing so unless your class of racing prohibits changing your stud patten I'd recommend upgrading to WRX struts. As a bonus you get a good choice of 15" & 16" wheels plus lightyears better brakes. It's all been done before and the parts are all off-the-shelf so you don't have to waste time building stuff (like me!)
