Struts 'n' Stuff

Post by Bumpty » Thu May 22, 2008 7:46 pm

Went to the wreckers today looking for some gen2 outback struts/springs, and there is a 97 in there with 169XXX on the dash. But it only has three, missing the front left which is a pity.
But next to it was is an imprezza wagon and a forrester, both gen2s as well. So I was just wondering, if you can, is it worth replacing my lib shocks with forrie or imprezza shocks?

The fella also quoted the three shocks on the outback (I think springs included...) $110 for 1 back shock, and $80 the only front shock.
They looked ok, nothing looked too bad, but then again i don't know what to look for, only how many ks the vehicle has done basically haha.

Anyway, throw anything at this thread!

My plan is, buy the three outback shocks with springs and then look around for a front left one...

Anyone in north Tas want to look at these shocks for me haha...

Cheers.

Don't forget brand new struts are only $150 from Subaru. With 170km on the clock they will be needing replacement in a year or two.

$150 each. Not sure how that compares to a set of aftermarket KYB struts.

KYB are a pretty well respected brand of shock. Kings Springs have a good name too. A popular upgrade on lots of cars is Kings Springs on KYB shocks.

KYB in Australia seems to have a major store in each state except Tas, Does KYB sell through any auto shops?

Email sent...

Curious, I've been to autobarn & Subaru to get prices etc for new stuff. And they wanted to know exactly what model/year gen2 o/b struts I was after...

Now if I go to the wreckers and by, lets say the 3 struts with springs from a 97 and then find another strut from an 99 (still gen2?) will they all be the same?

So if I end up getting a set of kings springs to fit a 97 o/b, they would also fit the only 99 year strut...

This would be great to know, as I think I might go down this path of buying the 3 struts/springs from wreckers and then sourcing another strut/spring from somewhere else. Then upgrading to kings, and newer struts in the future.

Cheers,

Try giving rokeby wreckers a ring. last time i was in there they had about 3 liberty's in various models and conditions. Might have what you are looking for.

Cheers,
Gen2 ended late '98, so some '98 models and all 99 models will be gen3, and different.

Cheers, So I'd be safe to just stay with 97 and 96 models, and struts off these two models are the same.

Pulled the struts and springs off the o/b at my local wreckers.
This is what we had,

Front right strut (good nick)
parts number: EG23
20311AC200

Back right strut (good nick)
parts number: EH29
20363AC201

Back left strut (poor nick)
parts number: EH20
20363AC211

-----------------

Ordered in from other wreckers - Front left strut (good nick)
parts number: GC02
20310AE150

Are these the correct parts numbers for the corresponding struts?
I'd like to know what the Front left strut came off from the other wreckers, as it's slightly different, maybe a gen3 strut?

I know Frog knows his stuff when it comes to this ;)

So with the poor nick back left strut and the wrong ordered in front left strut. I think i have to look else where, anyone have some gen2 o/b struts :)
post in my WTB thread if you like haha.

Always left side goes first before right side due road conditions.

I'm sorry to bring this due experience - i wouldn't bother with 2nd hand struts because they'll have different compression to other side unless you're not fussed. You might find one side softer than other side.
