Can't start it!

Post by wingman » Thu Jun 26, 2008 11:23 pm

I'm new here and will post a g'day post soon. I just need a little help in the interim.

CAR:1994 Liberty (EJ22) auto wagon.

ISSUE: I've had the car off the road for about 1 month. I've had the timing belt off to do some work. I put the belt back EXACTLY like the manual and many 'tech' sites explained. I've turned the motor over by hand and it all felt good. Now that I've put it all back together I can't get the motor to turn over. The starter is working fine and the engine sometimes sounds like it wants to start but wont.

QUESTIONS:
1. Could the timing be way out?
2. Can you flood these things?

Any help appreciated.

Cheers
Wingman

timing may be 180 degrees out on a certain cog. can be easy to do. double check your timing procedure.

Are you sure you did the timing correctly? There is two marks on the crank. One is an arrow at the front of the crank and the other is a notch at the back. If you have done it according to the arrow it is wrong. Very common thing to do.

Thanks for the advice. Just a quick question, I've done it by the arrow, Have I made a 'fatal' mistake or will the timing just be out. It turned over smoothly by hand.

Thanks heaps for your advice. I broke a timing belt on my 'L' series car and it cost me a bomb. I'll take it all apart tomorrow and let you know how I went. I knew this was the right place to come. What is annoying is that the manuals don't mention the notch at the back of the sprocket...
