G'day all,
Had drivers side rear wheel bearing replaced about 6 months ago on number one sons 1990 L series wagon. Have noticed that now outside of tyre has worn dramatically. Passenger side no such wear. Noticed also that drivers side rear wheel appears to be leaning outwards at top more than other side. Son says that he has metal grinding type noise (not pronounced noise, but noticable) also from same wheel. Would'nt think bearing would be gone again? Any other ideas?

The positive camber of the wheel explains the wear on the outside of the tyre. It sounds like something has not been put back together correctly when they did the bearing. One thing to check is the very large castellated nut in the middle of the hub (it sticks out the wheel). Has it got a split pin in it? It's possible maybe the split pin wasn't put back in or has fallen out causing the large nut to work it's way loose. This could cause the wheel bearings to separate and the stub axel to run at an angle. If the big nut comes off then your whole hub falls apart and the wheel comes off! Check this nut is very tight, you will need a breaker bar with a 36mm socket.
If there is a metal grinding noise then you will most likely need to get it pulled apart and re-done for it to be right.
Metal grinding means something is getting totally munted!

As Andrew T said... But: before going back to mechanic if the castle nut has come loose, do it up again, jack the car up enough to take the weight off the wheel, tighten again and put a pin in. go for a short drive then re-tension nut using the same process.
If there are no noises or problems I wouldn't bother with replacing the bearings again. I had this problem when interstate, it was a really nasty grating noise that got worse with speed. I got some bearings ordered in then found out that the castle nut had sheered through the split pin enough to loosen off.
After tightening the nut up and replacing the split pin all is good. I drove 900km home without a problem and its still going now - that was in janurary. The bearing does need replacing but is still operating without any nasty stuff going on - that side of the car is starting to scrub tyres slowly so its time for a replacement...
Cheers
