Gen III Front End vs Gen II

Post by __JC__ » Thu Jul 17, 2008 8:23 am

I know the set-up in the rear is totally different but what about the front?

Is it possible that the Gen III OB chassis to cross member blocks and control arm mounts/mounting points are the same as the Gen II.

Hoping Subaru's parts bin mentality means I can pillage parts from a Gen III outback that I'll have access to over the next few days.

Just to follow up, had a look today under the front of a Gen III and the crossmember is different.

What might be of use are the front control arm mounts/bushes which bring the rear of the arm down approx 15mm compared with the standard Gen II Liberty items. Of course the chassis mounting surfaces are slightly different so a small block would have to be made up for under one side, between the mount and the chassis.

For now I'm going to keep looking for a Gen II OB thats being wrecked.

I've just done a small suspension lift in mine as you'd know from the other thread - it's running raised Kings and Outback struts. Looking to get a bit more negative camber in the front and really want to achieve it by using the standard Outback lift blocks and control arm mounts (the rear bush on the control arm with the alloy mount)

The outback blocks between the crossmember and chassis will take a bit of angle of the control arms and in doing so - correct the camber issue.

ah yes i know what ur getting at...ive actually still got all the standard lift blocks from my outback..but my new strut tops have nice offset so the extra suspension lift i got isnt affecting my camber.. another option u have is a camber adjuster for the top....they are availiable but can cost a fair bit sometimes...but its another thing u may want to look into

Yeah yours should be sweet with the standard OB blocks front and rear + the offset lift blocks...

I'm keen on the the outback blocks + control arms because I'm stoked with the height it's got for now and feel that it'd be a waste throwing the raised springs and going back to standard height kings + 2" Lift. Would cost $700 or so, my time to fit it all and I'd still have about the same clearance.

IF I could find the OEM Outback blocks at a wrecker, it'd be like $50 the pair (or less) and whatever they want for the control arm mounts. So for $100-$150 or so I'd have a car with acceptable clearance for what I want to do with it and decent alignment.

GenIII is different to GenII.
Front and rear Cross member is the same, it just has blocks installed. I'm also looking for Outback for wreck as well.

Oh.. Melbourne... Mordialloc Auto Salvage - http://www.mordyauto.com.au/ will have Gen2 Outback but I am warning you I don't like these guys there, they're sh*tty, grumpy, out of price range/expensive/rip off. But if you can or think its a good price then go for it.

Other place I can think of that might be less likely to have one there is Subaru Parts in Highett.

Cheers AP. :)

Have you had a look at the front control arms of a Gen II Outback?

The way i see it there has to be some sort of difference in the rear mounts (rear mount on the front control arm) as when the crossmember is lowered so will the front of the control arm, meaning the rear of the arm also has to come down to keep things even.

On the Gen III I noticed the control arms are the same but the rear mounts drop the back of the arm down about 15mm. The problem I see in using Gen III control arm mounts is that the mounting surface (on the chassis) is a different, so a small block (about 30mmx30mmx20mm) would have to be fabricated to space it out on one side.

Really keen to see what they did with the Gen II OB.

my outback had nothing on the rear mount of the controll arm.. there was a 1" block on the crossmember on the front and that was it

on the rear there is thje rear cross member block and a block on the front of the trailing arm. thats all it consisted of

thats because the trailing arm mount itself is modified so no block is required.

I'm talking about the front Dave, the rear mount on the Front Control Arm ;)

In other news...picked up some outback spacers and front rear control arm mounts from Sunspares today. Will post some updates, photos and dimensions of each piece (should help people understand what im on about) once I start fitting them. The Outback front control arm mount is a lot different, it drops the control arm to match the cross member.
