HID Install, 05 Forester, need help.

Post by Hamish71 » Sat Jul 26, 2008 8:42 pm

Help,

Trying to do a HID conversion on a 05 Forester. Im mechanically handy, and I can follow instructions for elec, but im not a guru. Bought a HID kit from gadget master, and the instructions were....well....i dont think I can use the words here. Have a few questions to ask with reference to the attached files.

This is a bi-xenon installation, with two ballasts per side (one each for hi and lo beam globes).

Picture 3 shows one side of the harness. You should be able to see 5 circles marked. (red, yellow, green, blue, purple)

So, green circle goes to the factory harness for control of the lights. There is only one connector on the supplied harness, hence I assume it just goes to the vehicle harness on one side, and the other end is left disconnected? Sound right?

Purple, I assume, is just a relay that needs to be fixed wherever I can find space?

The blue circle, i believe is actually meant to be a red cable to the positive terminal on the battery?

Both the red and yellow circles are the black cable and I had originally thought go to the negative terminal on the battery? However, there are two more black cables on the other end of the supplied harness (not shown) for the other headlight, and there is no way they are long enough to come back to the battery. Should I just earth them?

And finally, you will note that the wires running to the ballast are red for one, and green, for the other. I assume one is low beam, and the other hi? Any ideas? Associated with this, the globes have two pair of cables coming from them, again one would be hi, and the other low. One appears in Picture2 to have a yellow band, and the other, a black band. Any ideas how I might distinguish which is what?

If H4 Hi low means a single globe containing both filaments, then yes.
The new HID globe contains two separate "filaments", hence two ballasts per side.

Had a look at the picture.... Since mine is H4-2 (Hi and lo separate globes)...

By judging the picture, Blue/Yellow & Red looks like ground/earth. - could be wrong tho...

Green Circle - connects to your main lights harness.
Purple circle - looks like it needs to connect to main body like all relays does.

I am not an professional on HIDs but its my guess, I would try it out but if i were ya, do one wire a time with an fused attached so that you can have a bit of "play" around trying out which works etc - if fuse blows you're safe that you know something isnt right or short circuit. I suggest you to talk to auto electrician..

Mmm same kit I have. Myne is like this - blue circle is battery power. Yellow and red are earths and green plugs into your normal vehicle headlight connector....
Is that what you are after ?

Pretty close. That is what I had assumed, I just didnt want to risk damage to the car by assuming wrong. Just two questions remaining.
One . As there is only one "green" connector on the harness, I assume it just goes on the side close to the battery, and the other factory connector is just left disconnected?

Two. One of the ballasts obviously controls hi beam, and the other lo beam. They are distinguishable by the red and green wires connected to them. The bulbs obviously have a hi and a low beam filament, each with a wire pair. One is marked with a yellow band, the other a black band. Any idea which is which? Logic says, if I get them the wrong way, I am going to be using the hi beam filament when i select lo beam, and both when I select hi beam. The only way I can think of working it out is trial and error in terms of beam patterns on the wall. Any risk in this?

1. Yes
2. Can't remember but no risk
