EJ option could easily be done so long as you were doing it with some people in the know, or have some mechanical knowledge. This would be the biggest power upgrade possible with the least amount of money spent for the amount of power gained.

Is one good idea Im keen on, and I now may even have someone to help me !! Being orig'ly a holden fan myself I dont have a great deal of experience with subarus so Im not real confident playing with him too much...

I have had a few other good ideas though..

And he's not ugly !!!

Get an early model 'wrecked liberty' from a wreckers, with an (1992ish) 'EJ22' efi 2.2L injected eng, good for nearly twice the power of an EA81. You can either put in the g/box AND eng from the lib or just the eng with an adapter plate. Cost anywhere up to $2000 for parts only

So many options... such a sexy ute

Hey my car aint no mona lisa either but she's my Rubi

I take my kelpie Jess with me quite often but always have her tied up in the back, 99% of the time i can trust her not to jump but every now and then she might catch site of another dog and try and jump out. She has enough of a lead to move around but just short of leaping over. Good luck with the car

I used to be a holden fan that knew nothing about subi's... now I've got one running subi in one piece and 2 or 3 holdens in bits waiting a restoration.

Its all about learning, once you know what your doing you won't hesitate to do it or try out something different.

Hey Everyone..
I'm starting to think the subaru just aint for me !!!!!! I love him so much but he's not taking to me at all...
Obviously as I stated prior, a week after I brought it the selector in the gear box went.. then after that was fixed I did a head gasket.. NOW last night I left a friends after dark and my lights wouldnt come on !!! No indicators.. spotties.. parkers.. NOTHING.. and no it wasnt a fuse.. I dont know whats going on... I thought these cars were tough as nuts ! Im getting a little bit disheartened.... I just want him to run like a normal car.. AND my heater doesnt work.. it was -4deg c out my house this morning...
Sorry... I just wanted a winge.

Bare in mind Carlie that your vehicle was constructed 30 years ago. I doubt there is an older daily driver on this board.

As brumbyrunner said, its a 30 year old car, that makes it a classic now

Be patient, you seem to be ironing out some problems that the previous owner may have been privvy to but didn't tell.

It'd be good if we could organise a saturday or sunday where some of the Vic crew rock around and have a "not fugly pamper day" to fix anything you find wrong with the car and anything we find along the way - only if you want to though. Also would be a good time to talk about options of gearboxes etc and maybe even "tour" the pick a part yards... Good fun they are!

Keep an eye on the Vic pages too - there's a "wreckers - what's there" thread along with other events happening in vic...

Stick with it, once you've got it the way you want you'll be glad you stuck with it

Yes driving a 30 year old Subaru as a daily driver can be exasperating sometimes! My 78 wagon is actually very reilable but every so often becomes a right pain in the butt.

I remember when I first got it (10 years ago

) there was a whole list of things that needed fixing: windsreen, bonnet release cable, muffler. The usual things I suppose. I had to repair everything for rego and at the time thought my wagon (known as 'The Lizard' - green and ugly perhaps

) hated me at first too, within 6 months everything I had fixed or replaced was broken again!

With regards to your heater problem make sure the hot/cold cable is actually moving the heater control cock (its like a 'metal plunger thingy'). It is located just above the parcel tray on the passenger side and is attached to the heater. They tend to leak badly once they are old and sometimes are removed, hence no heat. If the heater cock is stuffed there is a way to add an 'inline tap' to the heater hose in the engine bay, however you cannot adjust the heat from inside the car.

Once again, thankyou everyone for your help.. It's overwhelming.. I might even go as far out on a limb to say Subaru people are much more helpful then Holden fans.... but dont tell any of them I said that

If I was considering joining a subaru car club.. what would be the opinions on that ?? Which club is a good one ? Or should I stay away from them all together.. I have heard clubs can be a bit controlling... But I dunno.

Hey Carlie,

The "not a fugly pamper day" would be a day that a group (or one if that's the case) roll up at your joint to pamper your car that's not a fugly - as described by you in an earlier post

The Vic crew as I call them are members from this site who live in victoria. The Vic pages is the Victoria Members section, sorry about the nic name I've given it, apparently its an aussie trait to name things that are already named...

While your checking out the vic pages, add your details to the Vic members list and have a read up on the rest of us while you're there

As for a club, I don't know... there is a subaru club of victoria but I don't have anything to do with them... A group (small at this stage) of us are organising a 4wd day on the 9th if you'd like to join us, be it in your subi or in someone else's...

i was thinkin bout startin my own club incorperatin the members from this site who are interested. and there freinds with other 4wds. going to start looking into all the legalities of it in the next couple of weeks. but i want to do it with a group of people who love there 4wds and enjoy doing tracks and trips but with a no d!@#head policy. because i want to feel comfotable bringing my family along. i no people who help organise comp days.(not extreme stuff though) and from what iv seen the subys could do well. ill keep you informed

Definitely get a manual! Makes it easier to visualise the problem before you tackle it (Like the heater cock). The best place to find them is eBay and the best two manuals for your model are on eBay right now:

Servicing the Subaru 1600

Subaru Brumby 1600

These turn up on eBay all the time (esp. the Brumby one) so I would imagine they would be easy to find elsewhere as well.

I have been 4wd'ing a few times a long time ago but not as a driver.. and Im afraid Im not entirely sure of my little suby's ability when it comes to 4wd'ing.. or for that matter.. its reliability mechanically at this stage... I wouldnt want to get stuck or break down and slow everyone down.. or get left behind !!

Im not keen on riding in someone elses car for the 4wd trip.. I do appreciate the offer though... Is it only suby's going ? My live-in landlord/friend has a poogy 4wd.. (pujero whatever), he might be keen to take it too/instead. Unless I get a working bee/bbq going for before the trip !

But still not sure I would entirely fit in.. I'm not too keen on panel damage or getting stuck.. I dont have any 'rescue' gear or anything like that... And again, i dont want to slow ppl down.
Anyhoo... slightly off topic, anyone into motorbikes ? or hunting ? or fishing ? I'm looking at networking and expanding the circle of friends and you guys are all so nice !

the only weekend iv got free is the one after the trip but i can help after that. and between us im sure we could pull you out with our gear. and in regards to you not knowin what to do we would all help out with tellin you how to attack stuff. i give my sub a real hard time in the bush and no panel damage to date
