Maybe you could liase with Guyph about the kit he has AND decide what kind of overhaul is required - time isn't a problem to me.
I will be out of the UK 1st week Nov. just so you are aware.
Many thanks!
Most EA81s built after 1984 have the 3 holes in the RHS head already but if yours doesn't then there is plenty of meat in the head to drill and tap them. Best to remove the radiator but still may need a 90deg angled drill.1111giles wrote:Just seen the 'how to' fit power steering to a Brumby thread build up. (good stuff there from rtcb65 Redneck Rick)

Its nearly 11pm here and dark ! so cant check if I have the 3 holes required for the P/S pump or not. (And No Jonno I am not scared of the Dark !)
I am guessing it would be possible to fabricate (correctly of course) some bracketary to hold the pump IF the 3 holes are not there, picking mountings up from elsewhere - not standard but hey any port in a storm eh?
OR (and my prefered option) is it possible to machine the 3 holes into a head if the head is removed??? ie is there enough material there to do this?? I cant imagine that Subaru made different heads more like just didn't machine the holes in - for certain batches.
Anyone agree?? Please bear in mind I have not seen the actual 'hardware' involved here, but being a development engineer with access to a full machine shop and fabrication facility I tend not to be put off by problems such as.
Appreciate yr observations and comments guy's.
No probs sirphantomD wrote:Yes please!
No worries Giles1111giles wrote:Thanks to all of you for the reply's.
Looks like we can go on this one.
RSR - thanks and yes please liase with guyph and let me know what your assesment is. I guess you guys will have a chat over a coffee or 2 ! (mines white with 1 sugar!)
The good news from this side is the 3 holes are all there in the RHS head in my truck
So we can simply bolt up all the bracketary as mother Subaru intended !
Guyph - pls pm me how much you want for the set up so I can orgainise that for you.
Just so you know I am all over the place (in the UK and overseas) over the next 3-4 weeks so may not respond as quick as normal to any question or request.
Please can you post up the images as suggested it all helps!
I know I've already said this before but I gotta have the full monty kit ready to fit, so if we have to slow things down so as to get it all together or find extra parts - then that's ok by me.
Big thanks guys !
Please do....get a quote - happy to use your guy for any such work. Does he overhaul the pumps too? Maybe you could ask him for me.RSR 555 wrote:No worries GilesAs I've just completed my p/str conversion in my Brumby, I can make sure all of the bits are in a box before they are sent OS. I'll try and take a bunch of pics to help with the fitting side of things. It's good to hear your RHS head has bolt holes.. You may need to make sure there is not dirt/crap inside

I have a good friend who rebuilds all of my customers racks (mainly Liberty ones as they are prone to leak) He isn't the cheapest around but he uses good quality parts and I can (and he does with warranty but not for OS) guaranty he does a great job. I can get you a quote if you like?
Oh cool.. I just used my old one and it fitted fine.. unless Subaru used the longer ones in their later models all the time??rtcb65 wrote:We have a 90% complete power steering set up here if you wont it .. Even have the longer tappet cover breather pipe.
Ha and you thought I wouldn't read this thread no exhaust this time just an EJ22 motorRSR 555 wrote:Consider it done GilesI will ask him when I get home about the pump.
The earth wire was relocated and all will be reveiled once I get homeas long as Jules doesn't ask me to build a new exhaust system I should have a spare moment
Cheers,
Paul

Cheers - pls keep it on standy if needed. Waiting on RSR and Guyph to get back to me.rtcb65 wrote:We have a 90% complete power steering set up here if you wont it .. Even have the longer tappet cover breather pipe.
Hey Bennie Thanks for the comments - I'm sure the PS will be a great help as I do get off road in Scooby and as said before Eleanor would have no chance with the std steering set up!El_Freddo wrote:You'll love the powersteering Giles! It transformed the feel of Sunnie the Brumby when I put it in. There's some pics in my thread about sunnie, that might give you some idea of how to go about it.
A bit of advice for the rack installation - there's a black plate that's usually spot welded to the bottom of the engine crossmember with non PS MY's. You can either drill out these welds and use some bolts to put it back in OR you can pull the input shaft of the PS unit out, slide the rack in then replace the input shaft once the rack is in place. This is how I did it on Sunnie. It would have been easier to drill out the welds I reckon.
Best of luck with sorting it all out. If you need any bits I've got a unit with parts out the back of the pero's joint.
Also, the earth wire will bolt to the bracket that supports the back of the powersteering pump...
Cheers
Bennie
