OK, fair is fair. i have seen an EA82T sitting in a standard height Brumby a few years back, so should not have asked as others have said you need the special rare wide chassis MY or cut the rails or modify with a BFH or the like, portapower. Others have sad one of our legends Tim81coupe had measured one up to not fit. Others have got EA82 in MY but never to my knowledge contributed the detail.

I am in the middle of a EA81 225mm clutch change in the Brumby, my EA82 hybrid of carb block turbo efi heads and intake to be fitted initially as NA LPG to my Brumby engine sitting just too close to the action, got hoisted up without flywheel or eng mounts to get in the way of lining up - could not stand two challenges of same in one day ! I dropped the EA82 in to see the fine tolerances that show in the pics - just a smidge less that what I remembered but.... it fits. It is a bit lower than where mounts would have it, but it fits. Chassis may need rubber lining to prevent knock, and rocker covers better not leak as engine needs a lift to remove them.

Cool good stuff. Any pics that show the clearance?
I would be in favor of a few swift whacks with the BFH instead of putting bits of rubber, would prefer not to have any contact at all, but each to their own. Maybe there are some ridges or other bits on the rocker covers that could be thinned out abit with a dremmel tool too? Or ultra thin head gaskets :)

Thanks Mark, and so early in the morning too. Must find, make time, to learn this next step of bigger pics.

The lowest pic of last post there is the LHS, phew, see the clearance? Next one up is the RHS.

The clearance issue is really with the rear most part of the rocker covers as the timng belts have oodles of room, yet there is some symetry missing. Looks like minimal clear at LHS rear but the timing case has more room on LHS than on the right.The clearances are 'similar' to what I have sen before do not thinking it is any gearbox mount issue.

Mark has blown the covers on my transmission support tool - beats stuffing around underneath with a hydraulic jack. I just use chain to grab hold of the centre bolt excess and adjust the long nut on the threaded rod hook.

Oh, and excuse the dirty engine bay, didn't want water dripping all over the place - like down me neck or ears

The clearance is close a small amount of ajustment went on (not by me) with a hammer on the LHS here is the pics I took when I got the car I centerd the block and made new tranny mounts so it no longer pushed on the left side tunnel.

heh, so to make the engine fit comfortably, without any chance of hitting the rails during driving, the rails required modification? yes/no ?

Yes but it does not hit at all not even with hard acceleration I put over pits like this passed first time no fix up ether been on road like this for 2 years now no probs.

cool that's good to know. I guess Tim81Coupe was playing it safe for his at the time. Most others I know of have needed to do the mod but because of quadcam EJ's.

I still don't understand why you'd drop an EA82 into an MY - a carbie upgrade would be a better option IMO as the '81 carb is smaller than an '82's...

heaps of room. little tap with a hammer would double the room.
clearances are not symetrical left to right because the heads are staggered.
"UNDERSTEER" is when you hit the fence with the front of the car.
"OVERSTEER" is when you hit the fence with the rear of the car.
"HORSEPOWER" is how fast you hit the fence.
"TORQUE" is how far you take the fence with you.

of course the stagger is right along to the front where timing belt covers also appear to have different clearances - like any V of flat config. Good one wrxer - for putting the words to the scren !

Bennie - why? Oh, thought you were going to get on the EJ soapbox understandably.

EA81 has about 460,000km on it, the EA82 short had 188,000 when it came out and ran really well even after the previous owner near cooked it each day between home and uni, uni and home :)

Screwed some mpfi heads on it to see how it goes on LPG. EA82 mpfi heads and inlet tract will breathe better than almost anything I can do for EA81 in NA form - breathing will not be its downfall - just lack of power and valves

That rusty bonnet adds character to the Brumby there

Ok first I did not drop the ea82 in this brumby I pick up unfinish prodject cheap wanted the wheels decided to finish as it was alomst done. the bonnet has been painted now, the stagger was before I fixed the engine mounts and replaced gearbox mounts with new ea81 ones previously had one of each ie:ea81 & ea82. Sorry about hijacking your thred steptoe.

Seing someone pic of coil in original spot but with a loooong coil lead has saved me some concern on moving coil and wires - HECK just git a longer lead dude !!

I thought Tim had lift on his MY? By the look of T'subaru's pics you're all good if you're not running with lift - any lift and you'll have cam cover clearance issue I'd reckon...

No not this time, I was curious. If I couldn't EJ an L again, I'd probably drop an EA81 with a weber and warm cam in it... maybe...
