EA82T cooling system

Hey guys, noticed my Vortex got up to half temp really quickly when I drove it this morning, so when I got home I went to check water level and the rad cap was stone cold so I twisted it a little and the water in there starting bubbling and surging in the coolant bottle. After a few seconds the bubbling water stopped an I pulled the cap off and topped up the rad, didn't need any. Could this be a dodgey thermostat?

Sounds like thermostat, or blocked radiator, or faulty water pump.
Start with the easy, thermostat.
L serious, still.

Ditto to sounding like T/stat.
An easy way to test it when you pull it out is to put it into a suitable container and pour water from a boiling kettle straight over it to see if it opens. If it doesn't you'll know pretty much that's what it was.

yet to run a thermostat in mine ! If you were to buy a new one Nathe, put an order in for Tridons special - twice the price of a normal Tridon, but the valve is bigger than std after market and about same as factory - or get a factory genuine ....

You think I should just run it with out it? I did that to a 253 V8 I had and it was fine.

No you should replace it. Engines need a thermostat to reach proper operating temperature.
They will run without one but there are several risks depending on engine type and current cooling system health.
If its an EFI engine it will run constantly rich as the coolant sensor will tell the ECU its not up to operating temp.
Heater may not work well at all due to cooler water/coolant temperature.
Can get excessive wear on engine parts due to not being warmed up enough (same reason you shouldn't cane a cold engine, unless its a renter or you've stolen it lol)
Long and the short is, they are there for a reason so replace it!

oh yes, mine comment above comes with a warning as above, try it without for diagnostic porpoises only while you wait for a thermostat to come in. TT2041-180 rings a bell for a part number, you may need to check it is the high flow one though ??

I have only run mine a few tanks of fuel a year but been getting 10 on 95 and 8.7 on 98. Wonder what improvements I can get when thermostat goes in ??

I know I should run a thermostat, just waiting until I get motivated to swap in a new pump and rad sitting in the boot last three years
