Exploring/Camping WA Subaru Style.

Post by BlackMale » Mon Jan 22, 2007 11:25 am

Not wanting to hijack another thread felt that I would post this here, should we think it belongs else where then move it.

Given my lack of input recently felt that it was about time we got stuck into this topic as well.

The only reason I am not in for the trip on the 14th Feb is due to the location and nothing else. We have done this trip at least 6 times in all different seasons and are not interested in doing it again at this stage as it dose not change that much.

We feel that we missed a few opportunities to get out and about in 2006, through no fault other then our own, and therefore we are keen to get active again in 2007 - more like we were in 2005 for those of us who were around back then ;-) LOL.

The only minor issue with this is that as the group continues to expand, and I am not saying that this is a bad thing, it makes it more difficult to plan trips and I believe that more recon is required.

At this stage I am not aware of to many of us doing recon for trip prior to doing them with larger group numbers, and I can not think of anything worse then going down a track and then finding out that we have to turn x amount of cars around – its bad/hard enough when there are only 2 or 3. This was not an issue in 2005 as we were able to alternate between group members to do the recon as people were not out 4WDing as often as we were back then, now people are keen to go which is a huge positive but also has a few negatives.

In addition to this we also had a few trips up our sleave so to speak that few other members had done and now we only have 2 or 3 at the most.

Anyway our hope is to have more of a touring or at least camping trips. I was hoping that our more recent Harvey recon would have been more rewarding however it did not seem to be as pleasant on our last visit – is this accurate Subarino?

With all the recent logging is it worth making this a larger group trip/camping Subarino and AndrewT (as you stayed a little longer then us)?

This has not been discussed with other members so I am not wanting to seem like the hero or outcast others so do not take this the wrong way its just how we feel about the current state of Subaruing – actually we have missed 4WD with some of you.

SO what does all this mean… WATCH THIS SPACE (and Tim fix ya wagaon). Hopefully there will be 4WDing/explaoring/camping on all over the place.

It is also worth noting that sometimes these trips will be a little more family friendly (read less 4WDing) as sometimes we will stop to look at something. We also seem to have the only child present most on most of trips and therefore we need to also do things to keep her occupied well. In addition to this I should also let you know I will also have uni papers to write this year so some evenings I may be required to be anti social and sit at my laptop until the batteries run flat writing stuff. The positive about this is I have met most of you and will have some great observations to write up ;-) lol

We will let you know… for those interested the 1st trip/camp could be closer then you think.

I think Harvey may require abit more recon from us before a larger group heading down...you agree Subarino? We only found a very small camping spot and due to a rather scary incident (Hatchy nearly rolling) we ran out of time to get a better idea of the area.

As you know I'm up for ANY 4x4 trip, ANY time, ANY where :)
Just post it up here and I'll be there!

Andrew that was the second trip to Harvey that Dave, Johno and I have had down there, although the 1st was agggges ago. I know that you did some of the same track that we did however I know that you did not do all of them add to this a larger group and people wanting to look at stuff before throwing their Subaru’s at it and stuffing around with video and pictures all takes time so it would probably easily fill a day. The camp site did seem to be no more though which was a major same as some of the pictures from the 1st trip were awesome.

All I can say is Andrew if your THAT keen then call on 1 or 2 of us and we’ll see if someone is around to do some recon with ya and then bust up some different locations.

And yes Harvey IS gnarly hence us going… now I just have to figure out how to get Subarino back there… it was hard enough after the first trip ;-p lol only teasing ya Dave

I'm taking measures towards getting that wagon fixed Jaff Jaff.

Keen as to get out there again, and I'd much rather do something a little more challenging and exciting than the Powerline trek. I'd prefer camping over day trips too.

Harvey is a write off for camping... the place is pretty much leveled and the tracks far exceed most of the drivers on here skill levels at this time. I think there is a large number on here who would enjoy the challenge but coming close to rolling your car makes u think more about what you are and are not willing to drive up.

90% of the area though... if reconed correctly, would be good for a trip but i feel we may need to explore surrounding areas for camping locations. The syco bits should be avoided i belive... and definately go in the dryer times of year.

Im keen for much more exploration of Jarrahdale... i love the terrain and i don't need a tank of fuel to get there. As found on my last trip there we drove for hours and never even came across the usual Kittys Gorge track and the views we found made for a spectacluar trip. Also would be VERY interesting attemping it in reverse.

We spotted several other tracks leading up hills and into valleys that may open up another un-charted section. I have currently mapped out our last trip so i can make it back there very easily with the GPS.

I will be heading back there within the next few weeks to continue mapping.
