ej22 conversion questions
i plan on putting an ej22 into my 86 brumby.. an i've got a couple of questions...... do i need to replace the radiator with a lib one? will i need custom cv's? where can i get my hands on an ej to ea adapter plate? and finally what mods need to be carried out to the fly wheel?
any help you guys could give would be great.

- You can just get your existing radiator inlet/outlet pipes modified to suit the EJ22 but it is advisable to get a full custom radiator made up. Usually they use Toyota Tarago tanks and a Liberty core for this.
- If you are using an adaptor plate to hook up to your existing gearbox then you won't have to change anything to do with the CV's.
- EJ to EA adaptor plates turn up once in a while second hand (SubaMike just sold his) but they aren't too hard to make - have a chat to Subarino about this, he made one and has a few pics on his webpage.
- I beleive there are two ways to get your EA flywheel to fit onto the EJ motor. The first is to slot some of the holes, the second is to drill a whole set of new holes in between the old ones.
- You will also need a heavy duty EA clutch and pressure plate.

It actually needs to be longer for the EA82 5spd, the easiest thing to do is use the EA82 tailshaft and mount the centre bearing.
I wrote this up after doing my 5 speed conversion, 18mths later it's due for an update, the main point to be changed is that it's easier to elongate the bolt holes in the MY gearbox mount rather than modify the EA82 crossmember.

It's easier to slot the flywheel holes.... u will see... they are VERY close to an exact match. Only a few mm's off each hole. A dremil can be used for this... or simply drill each hole out a little bigger like i did. You will soon see that there is no way that enlarging the holes can make the flywheel off center due to a locating sleeve on the motor.
Making your own adaptor plate is very EASY... u will need a peice of 12mm think ally plate and a jig saw. U can use thicker plate but i wouldn't go any bigger than 16mm. 12mm is the exact size difference between the EJ and EA bell housings.

A plug.....
We sell adaptor kits with a redrilled flywheel, which has the old holes plugged with machined pins. The flywheel is then faced.
The plate is lazer cut from 12mm steel, 12mm alloy is cutting it fine on strength. All plates are drilled with studs fitted and are test fitted.
$495 plus freight

Here's a tip for adaptor plates:
Don't buy from VolksConversions. I had nothing but problems with my kit, and when I called him up to ask him very politely what to do he was a total prick and didn't wanna know me.
Get one from Steve, not only is it $200 cheaper but the after sales service will be second to none. Plug plug plug now you owe me mate.

why dont you just put all lib running gear in ur brumby ?
-ej engine
-ej radiator (custom bracket to fit)
-ej g/box
-wire harness
-custom t/shaft
-3'' lift kit
-lib inner cups to fit on brumby shafts
-custom gear stick for lib box (ither lib or l series fwd)
-mod g/box mounting points
might be a silly question but this will all fit in the brumby
-ej engine

there is LOTS to do in a conversion, leave this bit to the EXPERTS.
$495 is cheap when you consider the materials that go into it.
Very impressive quality control- minimal tolerances and perfect fitting.

1991 L Series wagon, white and perfectly normal apart from the ticking, no I think that is normal.
Jet boat..webbered EA81 with a hybrid tin dish welded and glued to it.

2 to 3 grand will leave you with ricing only. Sorry, but when you add up 1000 for an ej 22. 1000 to rebuild it to guarantee you don't have to take it out a month later, 2000 for awd gearbox and rear diff and disc brakes, not to mention the hidden extras we all come across. They alone add to hundreds plus. My basic exhaust cost me 440. and that was at bargain prices.

If you score some real bargains and do absolutely everything yourself it could be done for around the 3k mark, my project so far is upto $2,500, the only things I have left to buy are a clutch kit and some EJ inner CV cups and a few small electrical things like relays etc.
That $2,500 includes buying the car for $1,000.
You're best bet is to lurk the RSLiberty forums for guys who have just finished a turbo conversion and have an EJ22 to get rid of.
Xaymaca and myself went halves in an EJ22, ecu, loom and AWD box that was $200 for the lot.
Just be patient and things will come up for the right price, but at the same time, as wild horse has said, a rebuild may be in order.
