Only thing wrong with the "wheels 3 feet off the ground" thing is that when they are that far off the ground they aren't driving the vehicle so then it becomes a 2 or 3 wheel drive. :D

I would have thought the Lada Niva being built since 1977 would have been the first monocoque bodied 4WD ...... or is that AWD anyway , the 4WD\AWD argument has been around for years, it is just a play on words and another way for the those driving around in bush monoliths compensating for the small size of thier genitals to make themselves feel better, trouble is, they keep changing their mind, once upon a time it wasnt considered a real 4WD unless it had "cart springs" and live axles, and then it wasnt a real 4WD if it had coil springs, or worse still, independent suspension, that is until the bush monolith builders saw the light and started fitting it from the factory, all of a sudden its ok, now looking at most of them they dont even have to have ground clearance anymore either. So if you ask me, then whether it has an AWD or 4WD badge on it ,they both at some stage must be capable of powering all their wheels, how they achieve this is irrelevant. The only ones that aren't "real" 4WDrives are the ones that have diffs and hubs that can be locked and unlocked they are only "part time" 4WDrives. , and Subaru's offcourse.......they are unrealDrives :p

But the wheel is still driven, so it is still driving 4 wheels...only 3 of them are propelling it though

But then I could really be an arse and say unless it has 50-50 split and cross axle locks it's not a real 4wd. All 4 wheels get drive even if they are 3 feet in the air. Now if you were being absolute about it, then that is a 'real' 4wd. So factory 'real' 4wds are Jeep wrangler rubicon and the toyota models you can select factory cross axle locks on.
Cross axle locks and 50-50 split provides equal power to all wheels, vehicles fitted with Limited Slip type differentials still provide drive to all wheels, it just isn't distributed as equally ;)

But when a wheel is in the air it won't be driven.....ie 4 wheel DRIVE not 4 wheel drive sometimes then when a wheel looses traction.....ah too hard. Couldn't be stuffed. It makes no difference to me what it's called. All 4 of my wheels can drive all the time, in the air or otherwise. Real 4wd ;)

Better put this in incase someone takes that the wrong way....I'm just stiring.
